It all started at Sasha Ruszecki’s dining room table when she was in the 5th grade. When the world shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, everything felt uncertain, chaotic, and scary. As a ten-year-old, she couldn’t fix the big problems happening around her, but she could control something small, the colorful beads in front of her. What began as a simple craft project with her mom to escape the constant stream of worrying news quickly became something more. They ordered supplies, sat together for hours, and created bright, beaded bracelets. The repetitive motion of stringing beads calmed her anxious mind and sparked creativity. She started making more and more, experimenting with patterns, colors, and designs.
At first, Happy Piece was a small Instagram business. As they sold bracelets, Sasha paid her parents back for supplies, and felt proud of her growing piggy bank. But something important shifted. While she loved seeing customers smile, she realized the real joy wasn’t in the sales, it was in the happiness the bracelets brought. That realization changed everything. Happy Piece stopped selling and started giving.
Seven years later, Happy Piece is no longer about profit. It is a non-profit dedicated to creating handmade bracelets as tangible gifts of hope, kindness, resilience, and joy. Every bracelet is carefully made with love, each bead and thread carrying the intention to bring light to someone who needs it. With help of family, friends, and volunteers, Happy Piece has now donated over 3,500 bracelets.
These bracelets don’t solve big problems but they remind people they are not alone. They are small, wearable reminders that someone is thinking of them and that joy can still exist even on hard days.
Making bracelets after school and on weekends still brings Sasha the same peace it did when she was ten. Every time she hands someone a bracelet and sees their face light up, she’s reminded why she started this.
In a complicated world, Happy Piece may not be able to fix everything but it can create something beautiful and give it freely. One bead, one bracelet, and one smile at a time.
